Social Preview Plugin Compatibility: WordPress SEO Plugins Compared

WordPress SEO plugins can help a page publish og:title, og:description and og:image. They do not make the social preview itself dynamic, and they do not control the cache owned by Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn or X.

This guide covers the practical boundary between the SEO plugin, the page cache, the generated image and the social platform.

The short answer

Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO and SEOPress can all emit Open Graph metadata. For a WooCommerce product, the important question is not which plugin has the longest feature list. It is whether the final HTML contains one correct, public og:image URL and whether that URL changes when the product data changes.

Plugin What it can provide What it cannot provide
Yoast SEO Open Graph tags and social metadata controls A forced WhatsApp, LinkedIn or X cache refresh
Rank Math Open Graph tags and social metadata controls A guarantee that its image is the final tag after other plugins or themes run
All in One SEO Open Graph tags and social metadata controls A platform-side cache invalidation API
SEOPress Open Graph tags and social metadata controls A dynamic product cover unless another integration generates one

The same diagnosis applies to other WordPress SEO plugins: inspect the rendered page, not only the plugin settings screen.

Where the stale preview comes from

A product share crosses several independent layers:

  1. WordPress, WooCommerce, the SEO plugin and the theme produce the HTML.
  2. A page cache or CDN may serve an older copy of that HTML.
  3. The social crawler reads og:image and stores a preview for the page URL.
  4. The image URL may itself be cached by the platform, CDN or renderer.

Changing a setting in Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO or SEOPress only addresses the first layer. Purge the page cache when the HTML still contains the old tag. Change the image URL when the image bytes need to be re-read.

A reliable compatibility check

Run this against the public product URL:

bash
curl -s https://example.com/product/example | grep -i 'og:image'

Then verify the result:

  • There is exactly one effective og:image tag, or one tag that your chosen integration intentionally controls.
  • The URL is publicly reachable without cookies, authentication or a browser challenge.
  • The response is an image with a supported content type and a stable status of 200 OK.
  • After changing the product price or image, the HTML exposes the expected current image URL.

If several plugins emit og:image, the crawler may use a different value from the one shown in the editor. Disable duplicate output or make one integration the explicit owner of the tag.

Dynamic WooCommerce product covers

A static featured image stays the same when the price, sale state or stock changes. A dynamic cover can encode the current product values in a generated image URL, so a changed product produces a new image URL while the canonical product permalink stays unchanged.

That solves the store-side freshness problem. It does not force every platform to discard a preview it already cached.

FastOG for WooCommerce is designed to own the generated cover and keep the page URL canonical. It can also request a Facebook re-scrape when a product webhook arrives. That refresh path is Facebook-only; it is not a WhatsApp, LinkedIn or X invalidation API.

Avoid plugin conflicts

Use one clear owner for each responsibility:

  • Let one SEO plugin emit the page-level Open Graph tags.
  • Let the dynamic-cover integration provide the og:image value when it is enabled.
  • Purge full-page and edge caches after changing metadata rules.
  • Test the rendered HTML with curl, not only the WordPress admin preview.
  • Use the destination platform's own preview tooling where it exists.

Do not install a second plugin just to add another og:image tag. More tags do not create a fresher preview; they create ambiguity.

FAQ

Do I need Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO or SEOPress for dynamic OG images?

No. An SEO plugin can publish the metadata, but dynamic image generation is a separate concern. Keep the plugin that owns your metadata and connect one image generator to it.

Can a WordPress SEO plugin clear WhatsApp's preview cache?

No. WhatsApp does not expose a public preview-refresh endpoint. The plugin can make the next origin response correct, but it cannot rewrite a preview already cached in a recipient's app.

Which plugin is best for WooCommerce social images?

Choose the plugin that fits your existing metadata and schema setup. For preview freshness, the decisive factors are the final rendered og:image, page-cache behavior and the platform's crawler cache, not the plugin brand.

How do I test the result?

Inspect the live HTML, fetch the image URL directly, and paste the product URL into the Free OG Image Tester. It shows the metadata a crawler can read before you share the link.
